چکیده

In his book The Sleepwalkers, Arthur Koestler commented on how scientific progress has evolved along much more irregular paths than generally realized. During the past 100 years, deciphering the pathogenic effects of microorganisms and discovering the many important bacterial toxins represent another case Koestler might have drawn. Some of the most important achievements in the loo-year story of bacterial toxinology started in 1888 with the seminal discovery of the first bacterial protein toxin-diphtheria toxin-by Emile Roux (1853-1933) and Alexandre Yersin (1863-1943) at Institut Pasteur in Paris, 6 months after this “Temple of Science” was created.

A 116-year story of bacterial protein toxins (1888–2004): from “diphtheritic poison” to molecular toxinology

The concept that pathogenic bacteria might elicit their harmful effects in humans and animals by means of poisons elaborated by these microorganisms in the infected host is almost as old as the notion of pathogenic bacteria itself (William Edward van Heyningen 1950, 1970). The heuristic impact of the concept of bacterial poisons was considerable after the discovery of bacteria and their relatio...

Spatial and temporal patterns of alkaloid variation in the poison frog Oophaga pumilio in Costa Rica and Panama over 30 years.

A total of 232 alkaloids, representing 21 structural classes were detected in skin extracts from the dendrobatid poison frog Oophaga pumilio, collected from 53 different populations from over 30 years of research. The highly toxic pumiliotoxins and allopumiliotoxins, along with 5,8-disubstitiuted and 5,6,8-trisubstituted indolizidines, all of which are proposed to be of dietary mite origin, wer...

Medical consequences of the Asian black hornet (Vespa velutina) invasion in Southwestern France.

The presence of the Asian black hornet Vespa velutina in Southwestern France has been confirmed since 2005. The medical literature indicates that in comparison with other Asian hornets' species V. velutina is not a major health threat in Asia. A review of data from French Poison Control Centers showed only one envenomation clearly linked to V. velutina. The victim developed severe symptoms with...
